Palak Paneer, a popular vegetarian dish in Indian cuisine, combines the rich, creamy flavor of paneer (Indian cottage cheese) with the nutritious goodness of spinach. This dish is not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients.

  • - 2 cups fresh spinach leaves, washed and chopped

  • - 200g paneer, cubed

  • - 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • - 2 tomatoes, chopped

  • - 2 green chilies, chopped

  • - 1-inch piece of ginger, grated

  • - 4 cloves of garlic, minced

  • - 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • - 1 tsp coriander powder

  • - 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • - 1/2 tsp garam masala

  • - Salt to taste

  • - 2 tbsp oil

  • - Water as needed

  • - Fresh cream (optional)


1. In a large pan, heat oil over medium heat and add cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.

2. Add chopped onions, green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.

3. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.

4. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.

5. Add chopped spinach leaves and cook until they wilt down and release their moisture.

6. Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Then, blend it into a smooth paste using a blender or food processor. Add water as needed to achieve the desired consistency.

7. Return the spinach paste to the pan and bring it to a simmer over low heat.

8. Add cubed paneer and garam masala. Mix gently to coat the paneer with the spinach mixture.

9. Cook for another 5-10 minutes until the paneer is heated through and well-incorporated into the dish.

10. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. If desired, swirl in some fresh cream for added richness.

11. Serve hot with rice or naan bread.

Palak Paneer is best enjoyed fresh and hot, garnished with a dollop of butter or cream. This nutritious and flavorful dish is sure to be a hit at any Indian meal.
